“Am I A Good Jew?”

An extraordinary opportunity to explore this question and others related to Jewish identity will take place when Rabbi Abigail Treu, Rabbinic Fellow and Director of Planned Giving at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS), leads a four part educational series at three Twin Cities synagogues.

Rabbi Treu’s course, entitled “Am I A Good Jew? On God, Revelation, Being Jewish, Who Wrote the Torah, and Why Knowing What You Think Can Change Your Life” will tackle difficult ideas such as belief in God how doubts about tenets of Judaism affect personal identity as a Jew, and explore ways we can grow as Jews – intellectually and spiritually.

The remaining seminars will be offered at:

• Beth El Synagogue in St. Louis Park on January 30, and March 12 at 4:00 p.m.

• Beth Jacob Congregation in Mendota Heights also on January 30, and March 12, at 7:30 p.m.

Goethe and the Ten Commandments: Germans and the Myth of Jewish Exclusiveness
8th Annual Community Lecture Series
THE CENTER FOR JEWISH STUDIES UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA
Bet Shalom Congregation

This Event is Free & Open to the Public In a study of the Decalogue (Ten Commandments), Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the greatest figure in 18th–19th century German literature, advanced a particular view of German cultural identity and its relation to Judaism. Bernard Levinson shows how Goethe creates a myth of the Jew as culturally “other” in contrast to the German “self” as exclusively universal. Goethe’s biblical interpretation lay at the root of German thinking about Jews, anticipating the difficulties of modern German-Jewish relations.

Aish Minnesota
A JEWISH EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE FOR MINNESOTA: The name Aish HaTorah, literally “Fire of Torah,” was inspired by the talmudic story of Rebbe Akiva, a 40-year-old shepherd who could not even read the Aleph-Bet. One day, he came across a stone that had been holed out by a constant drip of water. He concluded: If something as soft as water could carve a hole in solid rock, then how much more so can Torah -- which is fire -- make an indelible impression on my heart. Rebbe Akiva committed himself to study Torah, and went on to become the greatest sage of his generation, with 24,000 students learning under him at one time.

As Elie Weisel said: “Aish HaTorah means to me the passion of teaching, the passion of learning. The study of Torah, the source of Jewish values, is the way to Jewish survival.” In the words of Rabbi Noach Weinberg, founder of Aish International: “Tie every Jew to a pride in his heritage, to a confidence in our future, and an appreciation of how precious his involvement with the Jewish people can be for himself, his children, grandchildren, and all of humanity.”
